A difficult path to freedom

The Israelites may not have always perceived of their wanderings in the desert, after leaving Egypt, as God’s loving hand guiding them, but He had a good plan in store. It was difficult for them to leave the Egyptian idols and little comforts of their past life behind, yet their trials would reap abundant fruit in the Promised Land.

Lent is often associated with the desert. It can get uncomfortable at times. It is easy to get comfortable with our lives in this world, but this is not our home. These 40 days are an opportunity to remember that the journey home requires discomfort and sacrifice. Jesus showed us the way home through the Cross, and there is nothing comfortable about it.

Persevering discomforts and sufferings for days, weeks, and years can become extremely difficult without occasional encouragement. Consider the visual and spiritual encouragement you can offer your parishioners on their journey this Lent and in life.

When planning a trip thoughts of the destination may be exciting, but we sometimes forget the long road to get there. Let’s try to embrace every part of the journey this Holy Week.
