All Saints' Day was formally started by Pope Boniface IV, who consecrated the Parthenon at Rome to the Virgin Mary and all the Martyrs on May 13 in 609 AD. All Soul's day commemorates all of the faithful departed, and offers us the opportunity to aid the poor souls in purgatory by our prayers and devotions. In fact, an indulgence for the souls in purgatory is granted to the faithful who devoutly visit a cemetery and pray for the departed.
