Herod is such a curious character from the Gospels. He is intrigued by John the Baptist, even though John is actively preaching against him. However, Herod lacks the courage to defend John against the cruelty of Herodias and ultimately, has John beheaded. 

Now Jesus appears on the scene and Herod is interested in the preaching of Jesus. Herod has heard that John has possibly come back from the dead, or perhaps Elijah is again walking among the people. Herod, consistent with his interest in John, now wants to see Jesus.

Remember that Herod is the tetrarch of the area, meaning he was the highest Jewish politician and compliant with Rome’s rule. It should have been easy for Herod to meet Jesus. A simple summons or trip to wherever Jesus was recently preaching should not have posed a great challenge. And yet, Luke tells us that, “He kept trying to see him.” Why was Herod having such a difficult time hearing Jesus for himself?

I do not know Herod’s heart, but I wonder if we could consider a few possibilities for why Herod was delaying or stalling to actually meet Jesus. And, I wonder if we can recognize some of these tendencies in our own hearts.

Lacking Motivation or Urgency: Perhaps Herod was interested in Jesus, but there was just so much going on. Tomorrow, he would find the time to summon Jesus. 

Lacking Courage: What would Herodias think if he met with Jesus? Would this become another John the Baptist situation? What would the others in the court think?

Lacking Sincerity: What could he gain from meeting with Jesus? John had said some bold and radical things which Herod had enjoyed hearing. Would Jesus be able to deliver a similar experience?

What keeps us from experiencing Jesus in our lives today? Are our calendars overflowing to the point that daily prayer or weekly Mass have quietly fallen away? Are we overly concerned about the opinions of others, choosing to keep our faith to ourselves rather than sharing the Good News with friends, family, and co-workers? Have we tried to bargain with God, insisting on a certain outcome in exchange for our faithfulness? 

Herod’s inability to find time for Jesus provides us a mirror to consider our own lives. Where are we actively seeking Jesus, and where do we think about it but never act upon it?

Herodes es un personaje sumamente curioso en los Evangelios. Siente intriga por Juan el Bautista, a pesar de que este predica activamente en su contra. Sin embargo, Herodes carece del valor para defender a Juan frente a la crueldad de Herodías y, finalmente, ordena que lo decapiten.

Y, sin embargo, Lucas nos relata que “tenía curiosidad de ver a Jesús”. ¿Por qué le resultaba tan difícil a Herodes escuchar a Jesús en persona?

Desconozco lo que había en el corazón de Herodes; no obstante, me pregunto si podríamos considerar algunas posibles razones por las que Herodes demoraba o postergaba el encuentro real con Jesús. Y me pregunto, asimismo, si somos capaces de reconocer algunas de estas tendencias en nuestros propios corazones.

Falta de motivación o sentido de urgencia: Quizás Herodes sentía interés por Jesús, pero simplemente tenía demasiados asuntos entre manos. Ya encontraría el momento, al día siguiente, para citar a Jesús.

Falta de valor: ¿Qué pensaría Herodías si él se reuniera con Jesús? ¿Se repetiría acaso la situación vivida con Juan el Bautista? ¿Qué opinarían los demás miembros de la corte?

Falta de sinceridad: ¿Qué podría obtener él de un encuentro con Jesús? Juan había pronunciado palabras audaces y radicales que Herodes había disfrutado escuchar. ¿Sería Jesús capaz de brindarle una experiencia similar?

¿Qué nos impide experimentar a Jesús en nuestras vidas hoy en día? ¿Están nuestras agendas tan saturadas que la oración diaria o la asistencia semanal a Misa han quedado discretamente relegadas al olvido? ¿Nos preocupa en exceso la opinión de los demás, optando por guardar nuestra fe para nosotros mismos en lugar de compartir la Buena Nueva con amigos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo? ¿Hemos intentado regatear con Dios, insistiendo en obtener un resultado específico a cambio de nuestra fidelidad?

La incapacidad de Herodes para encontrar tiempo para Jesús nos ofrece un espejo en el que podemos reflexionar sobre nuestras propias vidas. ¿Dónde buscamos activamente a Jesús, y dónde pensamos en ello pero nunca lo pasamos a la acción?
