Listen to this reflection
I am a person who likes to have all my ducks in a row. While I don’t actually own ducks, I do like to know the plan, who is going where and when, and the biggest thing of all, how we are keeping everyone fed. Everything goes neatly into its place and everyone is happy within the structure I’ve created.
Here’s the problem with me and my proverbial ducks: I want to be the lead duck. It’s my plan, my structure, my vision for how things should play out. Unfortunately, my vision is limited. I cannot tell the future, I don’t know what will happen next in my life. I am not in control of who gets sick, what the weather will be like, or the next hardship my family will face. As much as I try, those “ducks” just will not get in line.
But the truth is, they were never mine to begin with. When I make myself the leader, I am constantly trying to adjust things that aren’t mine to control. This leads to frustration, anger, and an unwillingness to trust in God’s providence in my life. Jesus, in simple but demanding honesty, requires everything of us, including the lead spot in our line up of commitments, concerns, and decisions.
When Jesus called the disciples, He didn’t spell out the next three years. He didn’t tell them where they were going, where they were sleeping, or outline the structure of their ministry. He simply said, “Come, follow me.”
Following Jesus doesn’t necessarily mean literally dropping everything in your life and going to the far reaches of the earth. For some, yes, but for most, no. Following Jesus means showing up in our daily, ordinary life, with our eyes fixed on Him and His plan. It means loving the person in front of us as Christ loves us, no matter how we may respond emotionally to them. It means taking time for prayer and for quiet. It means providing space for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives, rather than being slaves to a schedule that is so fast-paced we can barely catch our breath.
When I follow Christ, I am allowing Christ to take that lead role. I am relinquishing my grip on the fact that I cannot control everything around me. To follow Jesus is to place myself in line, trusting that no matter where He leads me it will be for my good and His glory.
