Faithfulness in the Small Things / Fidelidad en las cosas pequeñas

In today’s Gospel Jesus reminds us that “The person who is trustworthy in very small matters is also trustworthy in great ones.” It’s a verse that often challenges me because I know how easily I overlook the “small matters,” especially when it comes to my interactions with others. 

It’s easy to convince ourselves that certain behaviors aren’t really hurting anyone, so it’s okay to do them occasionally: bending the truth to avoid embarrassment, a harsh word muttered under our breath as we are cut off in traffic, gossip disguised as sharing concerns or prayer requests. These moments pass quickly, often unnoticed by others. But God sees, not to scold, but to gently draw our attention back to holiness. He sees because He cares about our wholeness – every piece of our lives – even the ones we think are hidden. Most importantly, we need to be diligent because the Scriptures remind us that we will be accountable for every word, action, and thought!

When I first started examining my conscience regularly, I was surprised by how many of those “small things” came to mind. They were the quiet choices that chipped away at peace: impatience with my kids, judgmental thoughts, and skipping prayer because I was “too busy.” But as I brought them to the Lord, I found not shame, but hope, showered in the grace of God. A grace that called me to greater attentiveness and trust.

God invites us to be faithful in the little things, not for perfection’s sake, but because love is built in the ordinary. Holiness grows in the unnoticed moments – when we choose patience, speak kindly, resist temptation, or simply turn our hearts back to Him in prayer. It’s in the quiet, daily “yeses” that we become trustworthy stewards of His love. And the good news? Each small yes strengthens us for the greater ones to come.

Let’s ask Jesus today for the grace to notice those little things and to be faithful in them, knowing that He sees and He cares.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos recuerda que “El que es fiel en las cosas pequeñas, también es fiel en las grandes”. Este versículo me desafía con frecuencia, porque sé con qué facilidad paso por alto las “cosas pequeñas”, especialmente en mis interacciones con los demás.

Es fácil convencernos de que ciertos comportamientos no dañan a nadie, así que no hay problema hacerlos de vez en cuando: falsear la verdad para evitar la vergüenza, una palabra dura murmurada en voz baja cuando alguien se mete delante de nosotros en el tráfico, chismes disfrazados de preocupaciones o peticiones de oración. Estos momentos pasan rápido, a menudo desapercibidos para los demás. Pero Dios ve, no para regañarnos, sino para dirigirnos con delicadeza hacia la santidad. Él ve porque le importa nuestra integridad, cada aspecto de nuestra vida, incluso los que creemos ocultos. Y lo más importante, debemos ser diligentes porque las Escrituras nos recuerdan que rendiremos cuentas de cada palabra, acción y pensamiento. 

Cuando empecé a examinar mi conciencia con regularidad, me sorprendió la cantidad de esas “cosas pequeñas” que me vinieron a la mente. Eran las decisiones silenciosas que me quitaban la paz: la impaciencia con mis hijos, los pensamientos críticos y dejar de rezar porque estaba “demasiada ocupada”. Pero al presentarlos al Señor, no encontré vergüenza, sino esperanza, derramada en la gracia de Dios. Una gracia que me llamó a ser más atenta y tener más confianza.

Dios nos invita a ser fieles en las cosas pequeñas, no para ser perfectos, sino porque el amor se construye en lo cotidiano. La santidad crece en los momentos que pasan desapercibidos: cuando elegimos la paciencia, hablamos con amabilidad, resistimos la tentación o simplemente volvemos nuestro corazón a Él en la oración. Es en las veces que decimos “sí” silenciosamente y a diario que nos convertimos en administradores confiables de su amor. ¿Y la buena noticia? Cada pequeño “sí” nos fortalece para los mayores que vendrán.

Pidamos hoy a Jesús la gracia de notar esas pequeñas cosas y ser fieles en ellas, sabiendo que Él las ve y se preocupa por nosotros.
