“Everytime a bell rings, an angel gets its wings!” It’s a Wonderful Life is one of my favorite movies. I faithfully watch it every Christmas while wrapping presents. Despite the flawed angel theology, the movie gets something delightfully right. Watching Clarence the angel spend time with George Bailey, we are reminded that we are never alone.

For many people, their biggest struggle is loneliness. Seeking to be seen. To matter to someone. This movie shows us that no matter how low we are feeling, we are seen. We do matter. We are never alone. And today’s readings give us further evidence:

“I am sending an angel before you, to guard you on the way.” (Exodus 23:20)

“The Lord has put angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.” (Psalm 91:11)

“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” (Matthew 21:10)

God loves us so much that He actually assigns a heavenly guardian to walk beside us in every moment of our lives! I love the idea of an angel being with us all the time. Not only that, but everyone around us also has an angel!

I can’t help but constantly calculate the angel math! The supernatural reality is that if everyone has a guardian angel, then for every person in any given space, there are twice as many beings in the room. In my family of six, when everyone is home, along with six angels, we are twelve. And a family dinner of twenty suddenly becomes forty! A full house is more blessed than we can imagine. Our small prayer group of nine is not so small when doubled to eighteen. And sitting in Mass on Sunday imagining all of the angels worshipping alongside us, I can’t help but feel awe!

Unfortunately, our poor guardian angels are often forgotten in our daily lives, as we frequently only remember them in times of trouble. George did not ask for help, yet Clarence patiently counters George’s many complaints and arguments, making me wonder what my own guardian angel thinks of my choices. Does he hear the tug from the other side trying to pull me away? Is he patient with me, constantly whispering goodness and right choices?

To become more sensitive to the angels in my life, I placed pictures, figurines, and ornaments of angels throughout my house. Having a different one representing each child helps me remember that they have a guardian angel watching over them. When I see them, I often whisper a prayer to my own angel, asking him to assist their angels in guiding and protecting them.

Resolve today to remember your Guardian Angel and pray:

Angel of God,
my guardian dear,
to whom His love
commits me here,
ever this day
be at my side,
to light and guard,
to rule and guide. Amen.

Amen.
