Listen to this reflection
Today’s Gospel proclaims: “I tell you, every one who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.” This is one of my favorite Gospel passages; it clearly lays out the stakes of following Christ.
The soul with a legalistic formation will read this and panic; it may even cause pain for one who struggles with scrupulosity. I have great compassion for you; that is a painful struggle.
But, if I may, I would like to ask you this question: How do you speak about the one that you love? When we are in love, we cannot help but talk about our beloved. It’d be a giant red flag for the relationship if no one knows about the most important person in your life.
From deep intimacy and affection flows courage that is willing to risk life and limb for our beloved. The best part? We don’t go first. The Hound of Heaven pursues us with deliberate speed and majestic instancy so that we might be His and His alone.
From this perspective, courage feels less like trying harder and more like falling into love. Look to the bridegroom, say yes, and tell the world about Him.
