The text in today’s Gospel triggers many reactions in me. You know the story. Jesus gets in the boat with the apostles. He falls asleep on a cushion in the back of the boat. A violent storm hits and starts to swamp the boat. The disciples panic. They wake Jesus asking why He doesn’t care that they are perishing.
I picture Jesus shaking his head in wonder and frustration thinking, “Really?! Again with this doubt? Where is your faith that I am with you, at all times, no matter the circumstance?”
St. Angela Merici showed undoubting faith during her lifetime. The youngest of five, Angela and her sister took a vow of chastity before she turned ten years of age. Her parents and sister soon died. Angela, along with her youngest brother went to live with an uncle. Angela became a member of the Third Order of Franciscans (now known as the Order of Secular Franciscans) as a young woman so she could receive the Eucharist every day and dedicate her life to serve Christ in the world around her.
When Angela was sixty one, she had a vision to educate young girls in Christian doctrine and to take care of the sick and poor. Angela founded “the Company of St. Ursula”. The Ursulines, an order dedicated to educating girls exists to this day because of St. Angela’s unwavering faith and trust in the Lord’s guidance through many difficult situations throughout her life.
Many times I have had challenging situations in my life. There were many instances when I didn’t have faith in the Lord. The consequences of turning my back and not relying on His presence in my life, no matter the circumstance, lead to my making terrible choices which have had long term effects. No one can go back and undo the past. My past has shaped my faith journey. It has helped me learn to pray, to study, to trust, to look, and listen for the Lord throughout my day. I have learned to take the time to discern what is right for me as I navigate storms, deaths and changes in all aspects of my life.
Please pray with me for intercession from St. Angela, for an increase in faith and dedication to the path Our Lord Jesus Christ has for each of our lives.
O Lord, Saint Angela fell in love with God at a young age and fostered that love through hard times. After many within her beloved family passed away, God gave her new children to care for as a spiritual mother. St. Angela, please pray for me, that I may learn from your example of faith, caring for those whom God has placed in my life, my community, and in the world, devoting myself to serving all in accord with God’s perfect will. Saint Angela, pray for me. Jesus, I trust in You. Amen.
El texto del evangelio de hoy provoca en mí muchas reacciones. Ya conoces la historia. Jesús sube al barco con los apóstoles. Se queda dormido sobre un cojín en la parte trasera del barco. Una violenta tormenta azota y comienza a inundar el barco. Los discípulos entran en pánico. Despiertan a Jesús preguntándole por qué no le importa que estén pereciendo.
Me imagino a Jesús sacudiendo la cabeza con asombro y frustración pensando: “¡¿En serio?! ¿Otra vez con esta duda? ¿Dónde está tu fe en que Yo estoy contigo, en todo momento, sin importar las circunstancias?
Santa Ángela Merici mostró una fe indudable durante su vida. Ángela, la menor de cinco hermanos, y su hermana hicieron voto de castidad antes de que ella cumpliera diez años. Sus padres y su hermana murieron poco tiempo después. Ángela, junto con su hermano menor, se fueron a vivir con un tío. Ángela se convirtió en miembro de la Tercera Orden de los Franciscanos (ahora conocida como la Orden de los Franciscanos Seglares) cuando era joven para poder recibir la Eucaristía todos los días y dedicar su vida a servir a Cristo en el mundo que la rodeaba.
Cuando Ángela tenía sesenta y un años, tuvo la visión de educar a las jóvenes en la doctrina cristiana y cuidar de los enfermos y los pobres. Ángela fundó “la Compañía de Santa Úrsula”. Las Ursulinas, una orden dedicada a educar a las niñas, existe hasta el día de hoy gracias a la fe inquebrantable de Santa Ángela y su confianza en que el Señor la guiara a través de muchas situaciones difíciles a lo largo de su vida.
Muchas veces he tenido situaciones desafiantes en mi vida. Hubo muchos casos en los que no tuve fe en el Señor. Las consecuencias de darle la espalda y no confiar en Su presencia en mi vida, sin importar las circunstancias, me llevaron a tomar decisiones terribles que han tenido efectos a largo plazo. Nadie puede volver atrás y deshacer el pasado. Mi pasado ha dado forma a mi camino de fe. Me ha ayudado a aprender a orar, estudiar, confiar, mirar y escuchar al Señor a lo largo de mi día. He aprendido a tomarme el tiempo para discernir lo que es correcto para mí mientras navego por tormentas, muertes y cambios en todos los aspectos de mi vida.
Les invito a pedir conmigo por la intercesión de Santa Ángela, por un aumento en la fe y la dedicación al camino que Nuestro Señor Jesucristo tiene para cada una de nuestras vidas.
Oh Señor, Santa Ángela se enamoró de Dios desde muy joven y fomentó ese amor en tiempos difíciles. Después de que muchos miembros de su amada familia fallecieron, Dios le dio nuevos hijos para que los cuidara como una madre espiritual. Santa Ángela, por favor ora por mí, para que pueda aprender de tu ejemplo de fe, cuidando a quienes Dios ha puesto en mi vida, mi comunidad y en el mundo, dedicándome a servir a todos de acuerdo con la perfecta voluntad de Dios. Santa Ángela, ruega por mí. Jesús, en Ti confío. Amén.
