Today we remember the Holy Innocents. I have read some commentaries in the past that they believed that only a handful of babies were actually killed. Then, others as many as 144,000. I don’t see that low number as being possible. Why? Because it was necessary to have large families due to the household workload. It wasn’t until after the Industrial Revolution that people started leaving the farms and moving to the cities to work in factories that families began to get smaller.
Who started this horrific event of murdering innocent children? It was Herod, who found out from the Magi that the Savior of the Jews had been born. He asked them, “Where was this to take place?” They told him Bethlehem. Herod was a very evil man. He gave the order to kill all the boys two years and younger in the country around Bethlehem. And they did. Very sad. Herod was threatened by a baby, a baby he didn’t even know. It was all hearsay that the Messiah had arrived. But his sources seemed to be credible so he reacted out of fear and hate and pride.
Has anything really changed in the last 2000 years? It has not! The slaughter of innocent children continues to this day. It is called abortion. Mother Teresa once said that abortion would be the scourge of America. That’s pretty strong language. It seems to be true. Our Supreme Court overturned Roe versus Wade and turned the power over to the states. Now, battlegrounds have formed in virtually every state in our country.
When I was on the Right to Life Board in Grand Rapids many years ago we were told that it was going to be a war of words. Listen carefully to those who believe that abortion is OK. They are masters at conjuring up words and sound bites that seem to say that abortion is OK. Some of you may be old enough to remember the bombshell that Life Magazine printed. It was pictures of babies in the womb. It was the first time that anyone was bold enough to show us when life starts. It wasn’t hard to tell that there were babies in there. Then, there was “The Silent Scream.” Remember that ultrasound? It was horrific! Again, it was explained away as though it really didn’t happen.
There will be an accounting for all this and I think we all know that. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me”. Let’s do that! Then get on our knees for the times that we haven’t.

Hoy recordamos a los Santos Inocentes. He leído algunos comentarios en el pasado que creían que solo unos cuantos bebés fueron asesinados y otros que dicen como 144,000. No veo muy factible que mataran a tan poquitos. ¿Por qué? Porque era necesario tener familias numerosas debido a la carga de trabajo del hogar. Recién después de la Revolución Industrial cuando la gente comenzó a dejar las granjas y mudarse a las ciudades para trabajar en las fábricas las familias comenzaron a tener menos hijos.
¿Quién comenzó este horrible evento de asesinar a niños inocentes? Fue Herodes, quien se enteró por los magos que había nacido el Salvador de los judíos. Él les preguntó: “¿Dónde iba a suceder esto?” Le dijeron en Belén. Herodes era un hombre muy malvado. Dio la orden de matar a todos los niños de dos años o menos en los alrededores de Belén. Y lo hicieron. Muy triste. Herodes sintió amenazado por un bebé, un bebé que ni siquiera conocía. Todo era rumor de que el Mesías había llegado. Pero sus fuentes parecían ser creíbles, por lo que reaccionó con miedo, odio y orgullo.
¿Mucho ha cambiado en los últimos 2000 años? La verdad que no. La masacre de niños inocentes continúa hasta el día de hoy. Se llama el aborto. La Madre Teresa dijo una vez que el aborto sería el flagelo de América. Son palabras fuertes pero parece ser cierto. La Corte Suprema anuló Roe versus Wade y entregó el poder a los estados. Ahora, se han formado campos de batalla en prácticamente todos los estados de nuestro país.
Cuando estuve en el Comité del Derecho a la Vida en Grand Rapids hace muchos años, nos dijeron que iba a ser una guerra de palabras. Escuche atentamente a quienes creen que el aborto está bien. Son maestros en evocar palabras y fragmentos de sonido que parecen decir que el aborto está bien. Algunos de ustedes pueden tener la edad suficiente para recordar la bomba que imprimió la Life Magazine. Eran fotos de bebés en el útero. Era la primera vez que alguien se atrevía a mostrarnos el inicio de la vida humana con imágenes. No era difícil descifrar que eran bebés. Luego salió “El Grito Silencioso”, un video de como el bebe reaccionaba durante un aborto. ¿Te acuerdas de esa ecografía? ¡Fue horrible! Y nuevamente, pusieron explicaciones de como realmente no había sucedido.
Habrá una rendición de cuentas de todo esto y creo que todos lo sabemos. Jesús dijo: “Deja a los niños venir a mí”. ¡Vamos a hacerlo también! Y luego nos ponemos de rodillas a pedir perdón por las veces que no lo hemos hecho.
