Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.

Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.

Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.

Amen.

I pray this Prayer to the Holy Spirit every morning. And unlike many prayers, I refuse to memorize it. I pray it with the words in front of me, slowly and solemnly, focusing on each word as I read and profess them to the Spirit. I never want to go through the motions with this prayer, because I believe in it completely, and I want to truly mean it every time I pray it. The Spirit doesn’t need me to pray it this way, not at all. I am the one who needs me to pray it this way, to focus and pray clearly and without distraction, because I have found in my life the only way my thoughts, my work and my very self can be holy is with the help of our Advocate, sent to us by Jesus from the Father.

And what an amazing gift we have been given! You don’t think the Lord takes delight in his people? The Holy Spirit, third Person of the Holy Trinity, truly God, given to us. Jesus is basically saying to us, “Here, believers. Here is God. For you. Times may get tough. Trouble may arise. Big trouble, suffering, possibly terrible things. But I am not only giving you something to help you through this, I’m actually giving God to you. The Spirit that proceeds from the Father is your helper.” What more do we need?

Consider the word “Advocate.” An advocate is a supporter, one who speaks up for us, who supports us, who defends us, who counsels us. Other names for the Spirit are Paraclete or Counselor. “Paraclete” basically means “called-in aid.” “Counselor” in legal terms is an attorney who guides us through some legal issue, often a trial. All these terms basically point to one thing: Jesus is giving us the most awesome help we could ever imagine. The Spirit of God, the very essence of His Love, is our help in all things, big and little, easy and most difficult.

With such a great gift comes great responsibility. First off, we must accept it. Jesus never forces His will on anyone. He freely gives. Accepting this gift, then, also means using it. It’s up to us to focus on how the Spirit’s breath is directing our thoughts, how the Spirit’s actions are directing our work, how the Spirit’s draw on our hearts is directing us to love, how the Spirit’s strength is building our defenses, how the Spirit’s guardianship is making us holy. Quietly open yourself up to focus on how the Spirit is acting in your life. Participate in it openly on your way to holiness.

Rezo esta Oración al Espíritu Santo cada mañana. Y a diferencia de muchas oraciones, me niego a memorizarla. Lo oro con las palabras en frente mío, lenta y solemnemente, enfocándome en cada palabra mientras las leo y las confieso al Espíritu. Nunca quiero solo decir las palabras de esta oración, porque creo en ella completamente, y quiero decirla en serio cada vez que la rezo. El Espíritu no necesita que lo ore de esta manera, en absoluto. Yo soy quien necesita que lo ore de esta manera, que me concentre y ore con claridad y sin distracciones, porque he encontrado en mi vida que la única forma que mis pensamientos, mi trabajo y mi mismo pueden ser santos es con la ayuda de nuestro Abogado, enviado a nosotros por Jesús del Padre.

¡Y qué maravilloso regalo nos han dado! ¿No crees que el Señor se deleita en su pueblo? El Espíritu Santo, tercera Persona de la Santísima Trinidad, verdaderamente Dios, dado a nosotros. Jesús básicamente nos está diciendo: “Aquí estoy creyentes. Aquí está Dios. Para ustedes. Los tiempos pueden ponerse difíciles. Pueden surgir problemas. Grandes problemas, sufrimiento, posiblemente cosas terribles. Pero no solo te estoy dando algo para ayudarte a superar esto, en realidad te estoy dando a Dios. El Espíritu que procede del Padre es vuestro ayudante”. ¿Qué más necesitamos?

Considere la palabra “Abogado”. Un defensor es un partidario, alguien que habla por nosotros, que nos apoya, que nos defiende, que nos aconseja. Otros nombres para el Espíritu son Paráclito o Consejero. “Paráclito” básicamente significa “ayuda solicitada”. “Consejero” en términos legales es un abogado que nos guía a través de algún asunto legal, a menudo un juicio. Todos estos términos básicamente apuntan a una cosa: Jesús nos está dando la ayuda más maravillosa que jamás podamos imaginar. El Espíritu de Dios, la esencia misma de Su Amor, es nuestra ayuda en todas las cosas, grandes y pequeñas, fáciles y difíciles.

Con un regalo tan grande viene una gran responsabilidad. En primer lugar, debemos aceptarlo. Jesús nunca impone su voluntad a nadie. Se entrega libremente. Aceptar este don, entonces, significa también utilizarlo. Depende de nosotros enfocarnos en cómo el soplo del Espíritu está dirigiendo nuestros pensamientos, cómo las acciones del Espíritu están dirigiendo nuestro trabajo, cómo la atracción del Espíritu en nuestros corazones nos está dirigiendo al amor, cómo la fuerza del Espíritu está construyendo nuestras defensas, cómo el Espíritu nos hace santos. Ábrete en medio del silencio para enfocarte en cómo el Espíritu está actuando en tu vida. Participa abiertamente en tu camino hacia la santidad.
