The last line of today’s Gospel is a command: “love one another.” Due to that love, my heart breaks when I hear about shooting sprees at schools and universities. I weep because of the wars and dozens of areas around the world with violence and conflict. Many people around the world continue to feel the effects of the global pandemic and I am filled with compassion and empathy.
In the Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “You are my friends if you do what I command you”: to love one another as I love you…to lay down one’s life for one’s friends… it was “I who chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain…”
Jesus calls us friends not acquaintances. Acquaintances are plentiful when life is good and abundant. Acquaintances will distance themselves when controversy or stressful challenges arise. Jesus is the epitome of a friend. He is there in good times and bad, knowing every strength and weakness about you while loving and encouraging you through it all. Jesus Our Savior knows each of us born on this earth intimately because we have been created in God, His Father’s image. Jesus has an all encompassing love for every member of humanity, no exceptions.
As His friend, I am compelled to praise Jesus and lift Him up in glory because He is the Son of God. Jesus is with us in all things; in the midst of suffering, conflict, illness, and war. He rejoices and celebrates each birth, graduation, wedding, big and small success. He is with us in all instances and situations of life. We are all part of the body of Christ Jesus. We are united in His everlasting, unconditional love.
That being said, before you open the next tweet, text, link, IM, image or your mouth in conversation, take a moment, a second or a deep breath and try to remember the connectedness and friendship Jesus has for the other. Breathe in the love, patience and understanding He has for you. Be open to listening to or seeing through another loved one’s perspective for just a moment. Keep in mind that love bears all things. It isn’t always easy. Strive to be a friend united in love. You can do it. Jesus is with you, now and forever. Amen.
La última línea del Evangelio de hoy es un mandato: “que se amen los unos a los otros”. Debido a ese amor, mi corazón se rompe cuando oigo hablar de tiroteos en escuelas y universidades. Lloro por las guerras y por las docenas de zonas del mundo con violencia y conflicto. Muchas personas en todo el mundo siguen sintiendo los efectos de la pandemia mundial y me llena de compasión y empatía.
En el Evangelio, Jesús les dice a sus discípulos: “Ustedes son mis amigos, si hacen lo que yo les mando”… ámense unos a otros como yo los he amado… den la vida por sus amigos… “soy yo quien los ha elegido y los ha destinado para que vayan y den fruto y su fruto permanezca…”
Jesús nos llama amigos, no conocidos. Los conocidos abundan cuando la vida es buena y abundante. Los conocidos se distanciarán cuando surjan controversias o desafíos estresantes. Jesús es el epítome de un amigo. Él está ahí en los buenos y malos momentos, conociendo cada fortaleza y debilidad tuya mientras te ama y te anima a través de todo. Jesús, nuestro Salvador, conoce íntimamente a cada uno de nosotros que nacimos en esta tierra porque hemos sido creados a imagen de Dios, Su Padre. Jesús tiene un amor que abarca todo para cada miembro de la humanidad, sin excepciones.
Como su amigo, me siento obligada a alabar a Jesús y exaltarlo en gloria porque Él es el Hijo de Dios. Jesús está con nosotros en todas las cosas; en medio del sufrimiento, el conflicto, la enfermedad y la guerra. Él se regocija y celebra cada nacimiento, graduación, boda, éxito grande y pequeño. Está con nosotros en todas las instancias y situaciones de la vida. Todos somos parte del cuerpo de Cristo Jesús. Estamos unidos en Su amor eterno e incondicional.
Dicho esto, antes de abrir el próximo tweet, texto, enlace, mensaje instantáneo, imagen o tu boca en una conversación, tómate un momento, un segundo o una respiración profunda e intenta recordar la conexión y la amistad que Jesús tiene para con el otro. Respira el amor, la paciencia y la comprensión que Él tiene por ti. Mantente abierto a escuchar o ver a través de la perspectiva de otro ser querido por un momento. Ten en cuenta que el amor todo lo soporta. No siempre es fácil. Esfuérzate por ser un amigo unido en el amor. Sí se puede. Jesús está contigo, ahora y por siempre. Amén.
