Today I’d like to ask you a probing question. Be honest with yourself. Have you ever felt jealous or envious of another person’s success, talents, or good works? I think we’ve all felt that twinge of jealousy. It’s a jealousy that is seeded in personal insecurity – an insecurity that tempts us into thinking that our light and goodness might diminish if someone else’s shines. Moreover, it’s a jealousy that misplaces why we shine in the first place.
Take heart friends! Today’s Gospel passage offers us a remedy for jealousy. Jesus gives a recipe for how to be exactly who God created you to be, how to go out and do good and holy works confidently, and how to celebrate when others do the same.
First, be salt. In Jesus’ day salt was valuable and essential. So, too, are you and each person God has created! Though not as pricey today as it once was, we still value salt because it enhances flavor in our food. When we behave as “salt of the earth,” we enhance the goodness that is around us. In biblical times and today, we also recognize that salt prevents decay and preserves food. As salt of the earth, we invigorate our communities, preventing stagnation.
Second, be light. In Matthew 5:16, we read, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” When we share our light, we’re sharing the light of Christ that dwells within us. Notice that “sharing light,” is not for our personal benefit. We don’t “share light” to seek favor, earn a promotion, or for profit. We let our light shine for others to see so that they may “give glory” to God! (see Mt 5:16)
When light is added to light, it always gets brighter. Verse 16 shows us that we are created to live in communion with God and with one another. When you light one candle and then a second, there is always more light in the room, not less. Neither candle becomes less luminous with the addition of more candles. In fact, what eventually happens is that a unified glow overcomes a dark space. This is an image of the Church. When we share the light of Christ, our good works spread the same way, eliminating what is not of God.
When you see someone doing something light-sharing in your community today, snuff out any jealousy or insecurity that you may feel by helping them to lift their light. Make the Christian witness visible and public. In this way, you’re sharing your light, too, and pointing the community to Jesus.
Hoy me gustaría hacerles una pregunta inquisitiva. Sé honesto contigo mismo. ¿Alguna vez has sentido celos o envidia del éxito, los talentos o las buenas obras de otra persona? Creo que todos hemos sentido unos cuantos celos. Son celos sembrados en la inseguridad personal, una inseguridad que nos tienta a pensar que nuestra luz y bondad podrían disminuir si las de otra persona brillan. Es más, son unos celos que no entienden por qué brillamos desde un principio.
¡Ánimo amigos! El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy nos ofrece un remedio para los celos. Jesús da una receta sobre cómo ser exactamente quien Dios te creó ser, cómo salir y hacer obras buenas y santas con confianza, y cómo celebrar cuando otros hacen lo mismo.
Primero, sé sal. En los días de Jesús la sal era valiosa y esencial. ¡Así también lo eres tú y cada persona que Dios ha creado! Aunque hoy en día no es tan cara como antes, todavía valoramos la sal porque aumenta el sabor de nuestra comida. Cuando nos comportamos como “sal de la tierra”, realizamos la bondad que nos rodea. En los tiempos bíblicos y hoy en día, también reconocemos que la sal previene la descomposición y preserva los alimentos. Como sal de la tierra, revigorizamos nuestras comunidades, evitando el estancamiento.
En segundo lugar, sé luz. En Mateo 5,16 leemos: “brille la luz de ustedes ante los hombres, para que viendo las buenas obras que ustedes hacen, den gloria a su Padre, que está en los cielos”. Cuando dejamos brillar nuestra luz, estamos compartiendo la luz de Cristo que habita en nuestro interior. Tenga en cuenta que “dejar brillar tu luz” no es para nuestro beneficio personal. No “dejamos brillar nuestra luz” para buscar favores, obtener una subida de sueldo o obtener ganancias. ¡Dejamos que nuestra luz brille para que otros la vean para que puedan “dar gloria” a Dios! (ver Mt 5,16)
La luz siempre se va aumentando. El versículo 16 nos muestra que fuimos creados para vivir en comunión con Dios y unos con otros. Cuando enciendes una vela y luego una segunda, siempre hay más luz en la habitación, no menos. Ninguna vela se vuelve menos luminosa al agregar más velas. De hecho, lo que finalmente sucede es que un resplandor unificado supera un espacio oscuro. Esta es una imagen de la Iglesia. Cuando compartimos la luz de Cristo, nuestras buenas obras se difunden de la misma forma, eliminando lo que no es de Dios.
Cuando veas a alguien haciendo algo que deja brillar su luz hoy en tu comunidad, elimina cualquier celos o inseguridad que puedas sentir y ayudalo a aumentar su luz. Hacer visible y público el testimonio cristiano. De esta manera, también estás dejando brillar tu luz y guiando la comunidad hacia Jesús.
