I tell my sister to ask me two questions when I get all out of sorts.
- Are you praying the rosary everyday?
- Are you writing?
Praying the rosary roots me by contemplating Jesus and how he lived. Writing helps me sort all the thoughts, ideas, and craziness in my head. It helps me to see what I am thinking and sort out what to do next. So why is it so difficult to do these two things consistently that I need reminders?
Jesus models this powerful framework for our lives in today’s Gospel. He desires to do the will of the Father, so he retreats to take time to pray. Then he acts by gathering the disciples and getting organized for service by choosing the Apostles. Together, they then serve by reaching out to the people. Pray. Act. Serve. Repeat.
It doesn’t matter what endeavor I am undertaking. When I follow Jesus’ model. The path is much clearer, the road more direct. Before doing anything, pray. Make sure you are rooted in God’s will. Praying helps us sort out our motives. Am I doing this for my ego or God’s glory? Am I listening to God? Are there any signs that this is more my will than his? Have I asked God to direct my heart to him? Am I listening in prayer as much as I talk?
When I take action, do my means further my ends? I can think of so many times in life where I had great motives, a good end in mind, but I was so determined on getting there myself, my way, that my plan alienated others instead of bringing them along. Am I planning to act in a way that will bring unity to God’s family?
We are each called to serve, to serve God by serving those around us. Jesus had a servant’s heart. We fulfill our purpose when we align our hearts with his and put our time, talent, and treasure in the service of those around us. We can’t fix the whole world, but we can shine God’s love into the corner of the world we inhabit.
The needs of the people around Jesus were so diverse and so overwhelming, no less so than the needs around us today. So what do we do in the face of such need?
Pray. Act. Serve. Repeat.

- ¿Estás escribiendo?
Rezar el rosario me mantiene arraigada al contemplar a Jesús y cómo vivió. Escribir me ayuda a ordenar todos los pensamientos, ideas y locuras que tengo en la cabeza. Me ayuda a ver lo que estoy pensando y decidir qué hacer a continuación. Entonces, ¿por qué me es tan difícil hacer estas dos cosas de manera consistente que necesito recordatorios?
Jesús modela este poderoso marco para nuestras vidas en el Evangelio de hoy. Él desea hacer la voluntad del Padre, por eso se retira a tomar tiempo para orar. Luego actúa reuniendo a los discípulos y organizándose para el servicio eligiendo a los Apóstoles. Luego, juntos, sirven acercándose a la gente. Rezar. Actuar. Servir. Repetir.
No importa qué esfuerzo esté emprendiendo. Cuando sigo el modelo de Jesús el camino es mucho más claro, el camino más directo. Antes de hacer cualquier cosa, reza. Asegúrate de estar arraigado en la voluntad de Dios. Rezar nos ayuda a ordenar nuestros motivos. ¿Estoy haciendo esto por mi ego o por la gloria de Dios? ¿Estoy escuchando a Dios? ¿Hay alguna señal de que esta es más mi voluntad que la suya? ¿Le he pedido a Dios que dirija mi corazón hacia él? ¿Estoy escuchando en la oración al igual que estoy hablando?
Cuando actúo, ¿mis medios favorecen mis fines? Puedo pensar en muchas ocasiones en la vida en las que tuve grandes motivos, un buen fin en mente, pero estaba tan decidida llegar allí yo misma, a mi manera, que mi plan alejó a los demás en lugar de atraerlos. ¿Estoy planeando actuar de una manera que traerá unidad a la familia de Dios?
Cada uno de nosotros estamos llamados a servir, a servir a Dios sirviendo a quienes nos rodean. Jesús tenía un corazón de siervo. Cumplimos nuestro propósito cuando alineamos nuestro corazón con el suyo y ponemos nuestro tiempo, talento y tesoro al servicio de quienes nos rodean. No podemos arreglar el mundo entero, pero podemos hacer brillar el amor de Dios en los rincones del mundo que habitamos.
Las necesidades de las personas que rodeaban a Jesús eran tan diversas y tan abrumadoras, semejantes a las necesidades que nos rodean hoy. Entonces, ¿qué hacemos ante tal necesidad?
Rezar. Actuar. Servir. Repetir.
