Today’s Gospel reading is a short one. A woman approaches Jesus telling Him that His mother is blessed. He responds to her, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
Jesus is saying that those who hear His word and who follow it will be blessed, thus obtaining eternal life with Him. It sounds simple, so why is this difficult to follow? Because the world gets in the way and wants to replace God. It wants to push Him away, divert our attention, and distract us from anything moral or religious. It wants us to think of the here and now rather than eternity.
Through the people he has swayed, Satan whispers to us that we have the “right” to do whatever we want to do, that we should live for today, and that we can do whatever makes us happy. But these are all lies. We do not have the right to do whatever we want, for we must consider other people when we act. And we must consider how our actions affect our own selves as well. Further, while living for today may bring us some momentary happiness, it does not bring the joy we deserve as children of God.
That is why we must not only hear the word of God but truly listen and pay attention to it. For only the words of our Lord contain the truths we need to hear. And the truth is, we all have value, and we all matter. God wants us to know that, to feel that, to go to Him with our sadness and our joy, and to follow His commands. But when we lose sight of those facts, we begin to do things that not only harm our bodies but also harm our souls, and this drives us away from God.
So today let’s think about Jesus’ words: “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it” and decide how we will observe them. Will we fill our lives with hatred for those who are not like us, or will we preach the truth with charity and love? Will we create division in our lives, or will we foster peace? Will we take the easy way out and hurt others in the process, or will we seek to do what is right and moral? Will we praise the Lord and thank Him for all things, or will we curse Him when things don’t go the way we want?
We have a choice in the way that we act. We have a choice in how we worship. Let us choose our Lord and His will. Let us choose eternity with Him.
La lectura del Evangelio de hoy es breve. Una mujer se acerca a Jesús diciéndole que su madre es bendecida y responde diciendo: “Dichosos todavía más los que escuchan la palabra de Dios y la ponen en práctica.”
Jesús está diciendo que aquellos que escuchan Su palabra y la siguen serán bendecidos, obteniendo así la vida eterna con Él. Suena tan sencillo, entonces ¿por qué es tan difícil de seguir? Porque el mundo se interpone y quiere reemplazar a Dios. Quiere alejarlo, desviar nuestra atención y distraernos de cualquier cosa moral o religiosa. Quiere que pensemos en el aquí y ahora en lugar de en la eternidad.
A través de las personas que ha influenciado, Satanás nos susurra que tenemos el “derecho” de hacer lo que queremos, que debemos vivir en el presente y que podemos hacer lo que sea que nos haga felices. Pero es pura mentira. No tenemos el derecho a hacer lo que queremos, porque debemos considerar a otras personas cuando actuamos y también cómo nuestras acciones nos afectan a nosotros mismos. Además, si bien vivir para hoy puede brindarnos una felicidad momentánea, no brinda el gozo que merecemos como hijos de Dios.
Por eso no sólo debemos escuchar la palabra de Dios, sino escucharla de verdad y prestarle atención. Porque solo las palabras de nuestro Señor contienen las verdades que necesitamos escuchar, y la verdad es que todos tenemos valor y todos importamos. Dios quiere que sepamos eso, que sintamos eso, que vayamos a Él con nuestra tristeza y nuestra alegría, y que sigamos Sus mandamientos. Pero cuando perdemos de vista esos hechos, comenzamos a hacer cosas que no solo dañan nuestro cuerpo sino también nuestra alma, y esto nos aleja de Dios.
Así que hoy reflexionamos sobre las palabras de Jesús: “Dichosos todavía más los que escuchan la palabra de Dios y la ponen en práctica” y decidamos cómo las vamos a poner en práctica. ¿Llenaremos nuestra vida de odio por los que no son como nosotros, o predicaremos la verdad con caridad y amor? ¿Crearemos división en nuestras vidas o fomentaremos la paz? ¿Tomaremos el camino fácil y heriremos a otros en el proceso, o buscaremos hacer lo que es correcto y moral? ¿Alabaremos al Señor y le agradeceremos por todas las cosas, o lo maldecimos cuando las cosas no salgan como queremos?
Podemos escoger cómo vamos a actuar. Podemos escoger cómo vamos a adorar. Escojamos a nuestro Señor y su voluntad. Escojamos la eternidad con Él.
