Do What Pleases Him / Haz lo que a Él le agrada

So Jesus said to them, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me.” What a powerful lesson Jesus bestows on us within this signal phrase. If Jesus, one of the three Persons of the Trinity, says that He does only what the Father teaches and asks, then who are we to do anything less but also submit ourselves, joyfully, to the Father’s will? Essentially, to do the will of God was Jesus’ paramount task. It seems only logical, therefore, that the same is true for all of us. 

The Blessed Mother also lived a life perfectly conformed to the will of God; for that, she is deemed “full of grace”. Grace is bestowed upon us at our baptism when we are united with the Father and adopted into His holy family as beloved children. Grace is the undeserved yet freely given gift of God’s own Spirit within us, and without it, we can truly do nothing good.

The courage to not only seek, but more importantly accept, what the Father desires for us  (especially when it isn’t aligned with our desires), can only be accomplished through God’s Spirit, gifted and working within us. The Father, who loves us so unconditionally and completely, would never ask the impossible of us. He gives us this grace, which strengthens us to fulfill, follow through, and continue moving forward, often in darkness and uncertainty. God owes us no explanation for what our lives will hold; His promises for our good and our trust in Him are never misplaced. Having the Surrender Prayer from Don Dolindo on our hearts throughout the day can help us stay the course of trust: “Jesus, I surrender myself to you; take care of everything!”

In the next line of John’s Gospel, which will be covered in tomorrow’s reading, Jesus teaches, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). Ironically, many of us are afraid to surrender our wills to the almighty, perfect will of God out of fear of losing our freedom and giving up “getting our way.” On the contrary, it is that mindset that instead enslaves us! Doing what pleases God brings a peace this world seriously cannot give and a sense of purpose no earthly goal can match.

If we already believe God created us and our existence is not some random accident, then it’s time we stop fighting so vehemently against God’s plan of sheer goodness for us. Today, let’s consider how we can accept, with joy and hope, whatever God has in store for us, knowing that this world is just a breath, a fleeting passage on our way to eternal life with Him. The master plan that God truly wants us to embrace is simply to be united to Him, doing nothing on our own, imitating Christ here so that we can be with Him in heaven forever.

Entonces Jesús les dijo: “Cuando hayan levantado al Hijo del hombre, entonces conocerán que Yo Soy y que no hago nada por mi cuenta; lo que el Padre me enseñó”. ¡Qué lección tan poderosa nos da Jesús con esta frase clave! Si Jesús, una de las tres Personas de la Trinidad, dice que sólo hace lo que el Padre enseña y pide, ¿quiénes somos nosotros para hacer algo diferente a lo que nos pide y no someternos, gozosamente, a la voluntad del Padre? En esencia, hacer la voluntad de Dios era la tarea primordial de Jesús. Por lo tanto, parece lógico que lo mismo sea cierto para todos nosotros.

La Santísima Madre también vivió una vida perfectamente conforme a la voluntad de Dios; por eso se la considera “llena de gracia”. La gracia se nos otorga en nuestro bautismo cuando nos unimos al Padre y somos adoptados en su familia santa como hijos amados. La gracia es el don inmerecido pero gratuito del propio Espíritu de Dios dentro de nosotros, y sin él, realmente no podemos hacer nada bueno.

El valor de no sólo buscar, sino más importante aún, aceptar, lo que el Padre desea para nosotros (especialmente cuando no está alineado con nuestros deseos), sólo se puede lograr a través del Espíritu de Dios, otorgado y trabajando dentro de nosotros. El Padre, que nos ama de manera incondicional y completa, nunca nos pediría lo imposible. Nos da esta gracia, que nos fortalece para cumplir, seguir avanzando y seguir adelante, a menudo en la oscuridad y la incertidumbre. Dios no nos debe ninguna explicación de lo que nos espera en la vida; sus promesas para nuestro bien y nuestra confianza en Él nunca están fuera de lugar. Tener la Oración de Entrega de Don Dolindo en nuestro corazón durante todo el día puede ayudarnos a mantener el rumbo de la confianza: “Jesús, me entrego a ti; ¡encárgate de todo!”

En la siguiente línea del Evangelio de Juan, que se tratará en la lectura de mañana, Jesús enseña: “Si se mantienen fieles a mi palabra, serán verdaderamente discípulos míos, conocerán la verdad y la verdad los hará libres” (Juan 8,31-32). Irónicamente, muchos de nosotros tenemos miedo de entregar nuestra voluntad a la voluntad todopoderosa y perfecta de Dios por temor a perder nuestra libertad y ya no poder hacer las cosas de nuestra forma. Por el contrario, ¡es esa mentalidad la que nos esclaviza! Hacer lo que agrada a Dios nos brinda una paz que este mundo no puede darnos y un sentido de propósito que ninguna meta terrenal puede igualar.

Si ya creemos que Dios nos creó y que nuestra existencia no es un accidente, entonces es hora de que dejemos de luchar con tanta vehemencia contra el plan de pura bondad que Dios tiene para nosotros. Hoy, consideremos cómo podemos aceptar, con alegría y esperanza, lo que Dios tiene reservado para nosotros, sabiendo que este mundo es solo un respiro, un pasaje fugaz en nuestro camino hacia la vida eterna con Él. El plan maestro que Dios realmente quiere que abracemos es simplemente estar unidos a Él, sin hacer nada por nuestra cuenta, imitando a Cristo aquí para que podamos estar con Él en el cielo para siempre.
