Have you ever had your attention repeatedly drawn to a word, concept, or phrase throughout your day or over a period of time? What if the time is actually throughout your whole life, not just a specific moment, day or week?
Joseph and his brothers from the book of Genesis could not have conceived the plans God had ahead of them once they threw Joseph into the cistern and during the subsequent trials and years. We tend to break up the natural flow of time into moment by moment bits that we can more easily deal with than the totality of a lifetime.
My own focus can easily be shifted away from God to a quick fix of what I want going on in my life instead of trusting the Lord and His plans for me.
St. Bonaventure, a Bishop and Doctor of the Church whose Memorial is celebrated today, understood that our primary focus should be on the life of Jesus Christ. He wrote, “Let meditation of Christ’s life be your one and only aim, your rest, your food, your desire, your study.”
Jesus said this to His Apostles in today’s Gospel. “Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed….What I say to you in the darkness, speak in the light, what you hear whispered, proclaim on the housetops….” Jesus didn’t want the Apostles, or us, to be afraid of following and teaching the Way. He knows there will be challenges ahead that can be scary and cause fear. The Lord Jesus Christ knows us so well that “all the hairs on your head are counted.” Mt 10:30
Pray with me St. Bonaventure’s prayer to the Holy Spirit for guidance and perseverance:
O Lord Jesus, through You I humbly beg the merciful Father to send the Holy Spirit of grace, that He may bestow upon us His sevenfold gifts. May He send us the gift of WISDOM, which will make us relish the Tree of Life that is none other than Yourself; the gift of UNDERSTANDING, which will enlighten us; the gift of COUNSEL, which will guide us in the way of righteousness; and the gift of FORTITUDE, which will give us the strength to vanquish the enemies of our sanctification and salvation. May He impart to us the gift of KNOWLEDGE, which will enable us to discern Your teaching and distinguish good from evil; the gift of PIETY, which will make us enjoy true peace; and the gift of FEAR, which will make us shun all iniquity and avoid all danger of offending Your Majesty. To the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit be given all glory and thanksgiving forever. Amen.

José y sus hermanos del libro de Génesis no podrían haber concebido los planes que Dios tenía por delante una vez que arrojaron a José a la cisterna y durante las pruebas y años posteriores. Jesús dijo esto a sus apóstoles en el evangelio de hoy. “Nada hay oculto que no haya de ser revelado… Lo que les digo en la oscuridad, hablen en la luz, lo que les es susurrado, proclamenlo desde los tejados…”. Jesús no quería que los Apóstoles, ni nosotros, tuviéramos miedo de seguir y enseñar el Camino. Él sabe que habrá desafíos por delante que pueden asustar y causar miedo. El Señor Jesucristo nos conoce tan bien que “todos los cabellos de su cabeza están contados”. (Mateo 10,30)
Recen conmigo la oración de San Buenaventura al Espíritu Santo para que te guíe y te persevere:
Oh Señor Jesús, a través de Ti ruego humildemente al Padre misericordioso que envíe el Espíritu Santo de la gracia, para que nos conceda sus siete dones. Que nos envíe el don de la SABIDURÍA, que nos haga saborear el Árbol de la Vida que eres Tú mismo; el don de la COMPRENSIÓN, que nos iluminará; el don del CONSEJO, que nos guiará por el camino de la justicia; y el don de la FORTALEZA, que nos dará la fuerza para vencer a los enemigos de nuestra santificación y salvación. Que nos imparta el don del CONOCIMIENTO, que nos permitirá discernir Tu enseñanza y distinguir entre el bien y el mal; el don de la PIEDAD, que nos hará gozar de la verdadera paz; y el don del MIEDO, que nos hará huir de toda iniquidad y evitar todo peligro de ofender a Tu Majestad. Al Padre y al Hijo y al Espíritu Santo sea dada toda gloria y todas las gracias por los siglos de los siglos. Amén.
