It’s a funny thing trying to play God isn’t it? We all do it frequently and no matter how many times it goes poorly for us, we still think we have more power and authority than we do. Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves? Playing God does not seem like a fun job, but I know I do it day in and day out. The wicked people from the first reading today are in the same boat. They think their way is better than God’s and they do not want God’s laws getting in the way of the things they would rather do.
I suppose this has been going on since the very beginning of time. If you really think about it, the first sin was not so much eating a fruit, but it was Adam and Eve believing that their way was better than God’s. Maybe God was holding out on them. Maybe Satan was right when he said that God didn’t want them to eat the fruit because they would be more like him.
I think we can all see clearly now that this was not the case. God wasn’t holding out on them. In fact, he wanted to give them everything. But the temptation that is at the root of many sins is doubting God’s love. Adam and Eve did it. Sometimes we do it too. And for what purpose? I know I can look back at my life and see that the most peaceful or joyful or happy times I had were when I was following the path that God laid out for me. It’s when I was trusting him the most that I felt most fully alive.
So how do we break the cycle of distrust that we have because of the fall? I think a good way is to make a daily act of faith. I have included one below that comes from the USCCB. I have found it very helpful to start my day with an act of faith so I can remember that God is always in charge and he knows best.

O my God, I firmly believe that you are one God in three divine Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. I believe that your divine Son became man and died for our sins and that he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe these and all the truths which the Holy Catholic Church teaches because you have revealed them who are eternal truth and wisdom, who can neither deceive nor be deceived. In this faith I intend to live and die. Amen.
Es curioso intentar jugar a ser Dios, ¿no? Todos lo hacemos con frecuencia y no importa cuántas veces nos salga mal, seguimos pensando que tenemos más poder y autoridad del que tenemos. ¿Por qué nos presionamos tanto? Jugar a ser Dios no parece un trabajo divertido, pero sé que lo hago día tras día. Los malvados de la primera lectura de hoy están en la misma situación. Piensan que su camino es mejor que el de Dios y no quieren que las leyes de Dios se interpongan en las cosas que prefieren hacer.
Supongo que esto ha estado sucediendo desde el principio de los tiempos. Si realmente lo piensas, el primer pecado no fue tanto comer una fruta, sino que Adán y Eva creyeron que su camino era mejor que el de Dios. Quizás Dios les estaba ocultando algo. Quizás Satanás tenía razón cuando dijo que Dios no quería que comieran el fruto porque serían más como él.
Creo que ahora todos podemos ver claramente que ese no fue el caso. Dios no se los estaba ocultando. De hecho, quería darles todo. Pero la tentación que es la raíz de muchos pecados es dudar del amor de Dios. Adán y Eva lo hicieron. A veces nosotros también lo hacemos. ¿Y con qué propósito? Sé que puedo mirar hacia atrás en mi vida y ver que los momentos más pacíficos, gozosos o felices que tuve fueron cuando seguía el camino que Dios trazó para mí. Mientras más confiaba en él más me sentía más plenamente vivo.
Entonces, ¿cómo rompemos el ciclo de desconfianza que tenemos debido a la caída del hombre? Creo que una buena manera es hacer un acto de fe a diario. He incluido uno a continuación. Me ha resultado muy útil comenzar mi día con un acto de fe para poder recordar que Dios siempre está a cargo y él sabe más.
