Each reading today is challenging of its own, but put them together and there’s a lot to ponder and digest. A brief summary of these readings are as follows: the wage of sin is death, considering all things so much rubbish, and Jesus did not come for peace but division. It’s not just one level but many interconnected pieces that can be really challenging to sit with and sort through.
My thoughts keep drifting to images of fighting amongst teammates, divisions in leadership, rifts within families and friendships, the abuse and misuse of resources throughout all of creation, etc.
These Scripture passages direct us to get rid of the impurities, bad habits, and trash that keep us away from Him and The Way. This is not a ‘do it once and be done’ project. It needs to happen every day in every situation.
I hear wisdom in the voice of my Mom and a dear Aunt saying, “don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.” They meant that at the heart of the matter there was something really precious and important. It might get dirty or damaged, misunderstood or misused, but at the center of it all, there is something to be cherished, nurtured and protected.
Today’s Psalm proclaims: “Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.” Hope in the Lord keeps me grounded, nurturing the grace I need to get rid of the bathwater, the clutter and dirt that keeps me weighed down with earthly matters, and redirects me to the heart of the matter. Jesus.
Lord, free my heart from all that weighs me down and distracts my attention from you. Help me to keep my focus on you, the center of it all, the One that I truly cherish. Amen.
Cada lectura de hoy es un desafío en sí misma, pero cuando las pones juntas y hay mucho para reflexionar y digerir. Un breve resumen de estas lecturas es lo siguiente: la paga del pecado es la muerte, considerar todas las cosas como basura, y Jesús no vino a dar la paz sino la división. No es un solo nivel, sino son muchas piezas interconectadas con las que puede ser realmente difícil sentarse y clasificar.
Mis pensamientos siguen a la deriva hacia imágenes de peleas entre compañeros de equipo, divisiones en el liderazgo, rupturas dentro de las familias y amistades, el abuso y el mal uso de los recursos en toda la creación, etc.
Estos pasajes de las Escrituras nos dirigen a deshacernos de las impurezas, los malos hábitos y la basura que nos alejan de Él y del Camino. No es un proyecto de ‘hacerlo una vez y listo’. Tiene que suceder todos los días en cada situación.
Escucho sabiduría en la voz de mi mamá y una querida tía que dice: “no tires al bebé con el agua del baño”. Querían decir que en el fondo del asunto había algo realmente precioso e importante. Puede ensuciarse o dañarse, malinterpretarse o usarse mal, pero en el centro de todo esto, hay algo que se debe cuidar, nutrir y proteger.
El Salmo de hoy proclama: “Dichoso el hombre que confía en el Señor”. La esperanza en el Señor me mantiene con los pies en la tierra, alimentando la gracia que necesito para deshacerme del agua del baño, el desorden y la suciedad que me agobian con asuntos terrenales, y me redirige al enfoque central del asunto: Jesús.
Señor, libera mi corazón de todo lo que me pesa y distrae mi atención. Ayúdame a mantener mi enfoque en ti, el centro de todo, Aquel que realmente aprecio. Amén.
