The Savior Seeks Our Attention / El Salvador Busca Nuestra Atención

Today’s Gospel passage begins with a profoundly divine moment, as Jesus, the embodiment of love, lifts His eyes towards His disciples. Imagine being there, and suddenly, your gaze meets His, and He begins to deliver the Sermon on the Plain. These words of guidance, even today, have the power to halt our bustling lives, offering us a path to navigate the world without being consumed by it. Jesus longs to gain our attention in our distracting world to strengthen us, instruct us, pour out His graces upon us, and guide us toward heaven.  

The first truth he shares is “Blessed are the poor.” Imagine the shock they felt when Jesus didn’t proclaim a great blessing over the teachers and instructors of the day; instead, he began with those in need.

Jesus doesn’t stop at blessing the poor. He extends His comfort to the hungry and the sorrowful, promising them joy and laughter in heaven.  These words, even today, bring us great comfort and peace, reminding us to keep Christ at the center of our lives, regardless of our circumstances, and to stay focused on our true home in heaven.

Next, Jesus warns the disciples and us not to seek comfort, wealth, and power over the Kingdom. He reminds us that our ultimate goal is not to accumulate wealth and power in this life, but rather to live in a way that prepares us for the next life, where we will be in the presence of God. We do not want to live for this life but rather to live for the next. 

If we are persecuted, insulted, and treated poorly for our faith, Jesus tells us through this passage that we will be rewarded in heaven. This persecution can take many forms, from social rejection to physical harm. But Jesus assures us that these trials are temporary, and our reward in heaven will be eternal. May we stop seeking this world’s approval, do the next right thing, and keep our eyes on Jesus.

El pasaje del Evangelio de hoy comienza con un momento profundamente divino, cuando Jesús, el amor encarnado, levanta los ojos hacia sus discípulos. Imagínate estar allí y, de repente, su mirada se encuentra con la tuya y comienza a pronunciar el Sermón de la Llanura. Estas palabras de guía, incluso hoy, tienen el poder de detener nuestras vidas tan ocupadas, ofreciéndonos un camino para navegar por el mundo sin ser consumidos por él. Jesús anhela llamar nuestra atención en este mundo distraído para fortalecernos, instruirnos, derramar sus gracias sobre nosotros y guiarnos hacia el cielo.

La primera verdad que comparte es “Dichosos ustedes los pobres”. Imagínate el shock que sintieron cuando Jesús no proclamó una gran bendición sobre los maestros e instructores de ese tiempo; en cambio, comenzó con los necesitados.

Jesús no se limita a bendecir a los pobres. Extiende su consuelo a los hambrientos y a los afligidos, prometiéndoles gozo y alegria en el cielo. Estas palabras, incluso hoy, nos traen gran consuelo y paz, recordándonos que debemos mantener a Cristo en el centro de nuestras vidas, independientemente de las circunstancias, y mantenernos enfocados en nuestro verdadero hogar en el cielo.

Luego, Jesús advierte a los discípulos y a nosotros que no busquemos consuelo, riqueza y poder por encima del Reino. Nos recuerda que nuestro objetivo final no es acumular riqueza y poder en esta vida, sino vivir de una manera que nos prepare para la vida que viene, donde estaremos en la presencia de Dios. No queremos vivir para esta vida sino vivir para la próxima.

Si somos perseguidos, insultados y tratados mal por nuestra fe, Jesús nos dice a través de este pasaje que seremos recompensados en el cielo. Esta persecución puede adoptar muchas formas, desde el rechazo social hasta el daño físico. Pero Jesús nos asegura que estas pruebas son temporales y nuestra recompensa en el cielo será eterna. Que dejemos de buscar la aprobación de este mundo, hagamos lo correcto y mantengamos nuestros ojos en Jesús.
