Friends of God / Amigos de Dios

In today’s Gospel, Jesus talks about friendship. A man goes to a friend at midnight asking for bread and is refused. He doesn’t want to be bothered. It makes me wonder what kind of a friend he was. True friends are there for you no matter what. It is in times of trouble that we come to know who those true friends are. 

Jesus is a true friend. He tells us to ask and we will receive, seek and we shall find, knock and the door will be opened to us. I wonder, am I a good friend? More importantly, am I a good friend to Jesus? I must admit, sadly, that often I am not. 

In the parable, the friend makes his request at midnight when the neighbor is in bed. He doesn’t want to be bothered. Maybe he’s tired. There are times that I am tired and skip my evening prayer time. Sometimes God is calling me to an act of service and I don’t feel like doing it, so I delay or ignore it. Jesus tells us we are His friends when we keep His commandments, yet I fall to temptation. I have good intentions, but sometimes don’t follow through.  

But God is different. He is a true friend, never tiring of our requests. He wants us to ask, seek, and knock. He wants to give us our daily bread, the Bread of Life. Jesus is the Eucharist that sustains us, nourishes us, and sanctifies us. He is the source of all spiritual blessings. We can knock on the door any hour of the day or night and God will answer. 

Even more than friendship, Jesus wants us to be family. He wants us to know God the Father. And this perfectly loving Father wants to give us good gifts. If we are not asking, seeking, and knocking, why not? 

I ask God for many things, but maybe they are not the right things. The gift God most desires for us is the Holy Spirit. It is the only gift we truly need. With the gift of the Holy Spirit, we can be a good friend to others here on earth and to God in Heaven. I encourage you to ask God for the gifts of the Holy Spirit, for wisdom, understanding, knowledge, counsel, fortitude, fear of the Lord, and piety. 

We can never be as good a friend as Jesus, but we can be better. Let us strive to be a true friend to our brothers and sisters here on earth and to God in Heaven.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús habla de la amistad. Un hombre acude a un amigo a la medianoche para pedirle pan, pero este se lo niega. No quiere que lo molesten. Me pregunto qué clase de amigo era este. Los verdaderos amigos están ahí para ti, pase lo que pase. Es en los momentos difíciles que llegamos a conocer a los verdaderos amigos.

Jesús es un verdadero amigo. Nos dice que pidamos y recibiremos, que busquemos y encontraremos, que llamemos y se nos abrirá. Me pregunto: ¿soy buen amigo? Y, más importante aún, ¿soy buen amigo de Jesús? Debo admitir, con tristeza, que a menudo no lo soy.

En la parábola, el amigo hace su petición a medianoche, cuando el vecino ya está en su cama. No quiere que lo molesten. Quizás esté cansado. A veces, estoy cansada y no rezo la oración vespertina. A veces, Dios me llama a un servicio y no tengo ganas, así que lo pospongo o lo ignoro. Jesús nos dice que somos sus amigos cuando cumplimos sus mandamientos, pero caigo en la tentación. Tengo buenas intenciones, pero a veces no las cumplo.

Pero Dios es diferente. Es un verdadero amigo, que nunca se cansa de nuestras peticiones. Quiere que pidamos, busquemos y llamemos. Quiere darnos nuestro pan de cada día, el Pan de Vida. Jesús es la Eucaristía que nos sostiene, nos nutre y nos santifica. Él es la fuente de todas las bendiciones espirituales. Podemos llamar a la puerta a cualquier hora del día o de la noche y Dios responderá.

Más que amistad, Jesús quiere que seamos familia. Quiere que conozcamos a Dios Padre. Y este Padre amoroso quiere darnos buenos regalos. Si no estamos pidiendo, buscando ni llamando, ¿por qué no?

Le pido a Dios muchas cosas, pero tal vez no sean las correctas. El don que Dios más desea para nosotros es el Espíritu Santo. Es el único don que realmente necesitamos. Con el don del Espíritu Santo, podemos ser buenos amigos de los demás aquí en la tierra y de Dios en el Cielo. Los animo a pedirle a Dios los dones del Espíritu Santo: sabiduría, entendimiento, conocimiento, consejo, fortaleza, temor de Dios y piedad.

Nunca podremos ser tan buenos amigos como Jesús, pero sí podemos ser mejores. Esforcémonos por ser verdaderos amigos de nuestros hermanos y hermanas aquí en la tierra y de Dios en el Cielo.
