Today we celebrate the Memorial of our Guardian Angels. Every human being has a guardian angel. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: “From infancy to death human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. ‘Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life.’ Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.” (CCC 336)
The Apostle Matthew refers to Guardian Angels in the Gospel today when Jesus spoke to the disciples about children. Besides telling them they must humble themselves like children, Jesus said, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” (Mt 18:10)
To humble oneself like a child is to do the will of our heavenly Father. I heard a homily recently which pointed out children follow directions much more easily than adults do due to the lack of humility or obedience one has as a person ages; we do not like to be told what to do by others as we become adults. I know there have been many times I get perturbed by being directed to do something I may not agree with or feel is my job to handle.
I sometimes forget that the Lord has given each human a personal guide to go through life as a companion. I wonder if my guardian angel feels frustrated when I choose to ignore the gentle insights, nudges, and protections that are divinely given for my benefit? I could have avoided the things I’ve done or have failed to do that have caused me to sin if I had been paying attention to my guardian angel. I chose to act or respond the way I did despite my angels’ best efforts. My guardian angel does God’s will as it says in today’s Alleluia verse.
St. Pio of Pietrelcina (better known as Padre Pio) prayed to his Guardian Angel on a daily basis. Please join me in this prayer to your own Guardian Angel, and to the angels of those who are unaware of the heavenly being faithfully by their side.
“Oh, my Holy Guardian Angel, care for my soul and my body. Enlighten my mind that I may better know the Lord my God and love Him with all my heart. Watch over me when I pray so I won’t give into life’s distractions. Sustain me with your counsel to live as a righteous Christian, and help me to do good works with a generous heart. Protect me from the cunning of the adversary, and lift me up when I am being tempted so I may win the fight against evil. Stay beside me at all times; never stop watching over me until I am called back to the Father’s house, where we will praise our great God together for all eternity. Amen.”
Hoy celebramos el Memorial de nuestros Ángeles de la Guarda. Todo ser humano tiene un Ángel de la Guarda. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica afirma: “Desde su comienzo hasta la muerte, la vida humana está rodeada de su custodia y de su intercesión. ‘Nadie podrá negar que cada fiel tiene a su lado un ángel como protector y pastor para conducir su vida’. Desde esta tierra, la vida cristiana participa, por la fe, en la sociedad bienaventurada de los ángeles y de los hombres, unidos en Dios.” (CIC 336)
El apóstol Mateo se refiere a los Ángeles de la Guarda en el Evangelio de hoy cuando Jesús les habló a los discípulos acerca de los niños. Además de decirles que deben humillarse como niños, Jesús dijo: “Cuidado con despreciar a uno de estos pequeños, pues yo les digo que sus ángeles, en el cielo, ven continuamente el rostro de mi Padre, que está en el cielo”. (Mt 18,10)
Humillarse como un niño es hacer la voluntad de nuestro Padre celestial. Hace poco escuché una homilía que señalaba que los niños siguen instrucciones mucho más fácilmente que los adultos debido a la falta de humildad u obediencia que uno tiene a medida que envejece; no nos gusta que los demás nos digan qué hacer cuando nos hacemos adultos. Sé que ha habido muchas veces en las que me perturbó y ordenen hacer algo con lo que no estoy de acuerdo o siento que es mi trabajo manejarlo.
A veces olvido que el Señor le ha dado a cada ser humano una guía personal para ir por la vida como un compañero. Me pregunto si mi Ángel de la Guarda se siente frustrado cuando elijo ignorar las suaves perspicacias, los empujones y las protecciones que se otorgan divinamente para mi beneficio. Podría haber evitado las cosas que he hecho o dejado de hacer que me han hecho pecar si hubiera estado prestando atención a mi Ángel Guardián. Elegí actuar o responder como lo hice a pesar de los mejores esfuerzos de mis ángeles. Mi Ángel Guardián hace la voluntad de Dios como dice el versículo del Aleluya de hoy.
San Pío de Pietrelcina (más conocido como Padre Pío) rezaba a diario a su Ángel de la Guarda. Por favor, únase a mí en esta oración a su propio Ángel de la Guarda, ya los ángeles de aquellos que ignoran que el ser celestial está fielmente a su lado.
“Oh, mi Santo Ángel de la Guarda, cuida mi alma y mi cuerpo. Ilumina mi mente para que pueda conocer mejor al Señor mi Dios y amarlo con todo mi corazón. Cuídame cuando oró para que no me entregue a las distracciones de la vida. Sostenme con tu consejo de vivir como un cristiano justo, y ayúdame a hacer buenas obras con un corazón generoso. Protégeme de la astucia del adversario, y levántame cuando sea tentado para que pueda ganar la lucha contra el mal. Quédate a mi lado en todo momento; nunca dejes de velar por mí hasta que sea llamado de regreso a la casa del Padre, donde juntos alabaremos a nuestro gran Dios por toda la eternidad. Amén.”
