Readiness is a concept which we willingly embrace in life, yet we give very little thought to. If you really stop and think about it, how many times a day do we have to get ready or be ready for something? You have a morning routine in which you get ready for your day. You prepare for a big project or important meeting at work because you have to be ready. Heck, you even have to get ready for dinner because prepared food doesn’t just magically appear on the table.
We have to be ready … in our daily lives and especially in our spiritual lives. The latter is the theme that is tackled in today’s readings.
The First Reading speaks about conduct and how we should carry ourselves. St. Paul refers to all the instructions that the Thessalonians have received from Jesus Himself. We have the same instructions ourselves and we can find them in things like the Beatitudes, the two greatest commandments and more.
When we follow His commandments and pursue His will, we will find ourselves ready for when Jesus comes again. We will not be like the foolish virgins who let the oil in their lamps go out and were unprepared to meet the bridegroom. Because it is true, we do not know the day or the hour when Christ will come again, although many will try their hardest to predict it.
How do we prepare ourselves, then? How do we stay ready? As I already mentioned, we must follow the teachings that Jesus has given us. That’s easier said than done, though. Another way to stay ready in the spiritual life is to be aware of and willingly admit when we’ve fallen short. We do that through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Church precepts ask us to confess our sins at least once a year; however, there is no better way to be ready in the spiritual life than to take up a habit of regular confession. Even when we are free of serious, mortal sin, there is beauty in clearing out the muck of the venial sins in our life. Timelines of regular confession look different for each person depending on their state in life.
So get ready, get set. Jesus Christ will come again. Will you be ready to meet Him?
La preparación es un concepto que adoptamos voluntariamente en la vida, pero en el que pensamos muy poco. Si realmente te detienes a pensarlo, ¿cuántas veces al día tenemos que prepararnos o estar listos para algo? Tienes una rutina matutina en la que te preparas para tu día. Te preparas para un gran proyecto o una reunión importante en el trabajo porque tienes que estar listo. Incluso tienes que prepararte para la cena porque la comida preparada no aparece mágicamente en la mesa.
Tenemos que estar preparados… en nuestra vida diaria y especialmente en nuestra vida espiritual. Este último es el tema que se aborda en las lecturas de hoy.
La primera lectura habla de la conducta y de cómo debemos comportarnos. San Pablo se refiere a todas las instrucciones que los tesalonicenses han recibido del mismo Jesús. Nosotros mismos tenemos las mismas instrucciones y podemos encontrarlas en cosas como las Bienaventuranzas, los dos grandes mandamientos y más.
Cuando seguimos Sus mandamientos y buscamos Su voluntad, estaremos listos para cuando Jesús regrese. No seremos como las vírgenes insensatas que dejaron apagar el aceite de sus lámparas y no estaban preparadas para recibir al novio. Porque es verdad, no sabemos el día ni la hora en que Cristo vendrá de nuevo, aunque muchos se esforzarán por predecirlo.
¿Entonces cómo nos preparamos? ¿Cómo nos mantenemos listos? Como ya mencioné, debemos seguir las enseñanzas que Jesús nos ha dado. Sin embargo, es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo. Otra forma de estar listo en la vida espiritual es ser consciente y admitir de buena gana cuando nos hemos quedado cortos. Lo hacemos a través del Sacramento de la Reconciliación.
Los preceptos de la Iglesia nos piden que confesemos nuestros pecados al menos una vez al año; sin embargo, no hay mejor manera de estar preparados en la vida espiritual que adquirir el hábito de la confesión regular. Incluso cuando estamos libres de pecados mortales graves, hay belleza en limpiar la suciedad de los pecados veniales en nuestra vida. Los plazos de la confesión regular pueden ser diferentes para cada persona según su estado de vida.
Así que prepárate y ponte listo. Jesucristo vendrá de nuevo. ¿Vas a estar listo para encontrarte con Él?
