The 72 disciples have done some astounding things – they have subdued demons and been given the power to tread on serpents without being harmed. So, of course, they are rejoicing. But Jesus wants to make sure they are rejoicing in the right thing. The power that has been given them is not reason for rejoicing; it is the fact that their “names are written in heaven” that is cause for rejoicing. They are chosen and called, and they have opened up within themselves the space for his grace to act through them, which is what has empowered them to overcome Satan.
Jesus praises His Father for all this, and gives a profound insight into the life of the Trinity. “ALL THINGS have been handed over to me by my Father.” Only the Father knows fully Who the Son is, and only the Son fully knows the Father; but the Son wishes to share this knowledge, and reveal the Father to others and to us if only we are truly open.
Then Jesus turns to his Apostles in private and, still rejoicing with holy gladness at the faith he has seen, makes clear what a great blessing they have been given, in being chosen and called to walk with him and see the mighty works of God: “Many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it…” The Kingdom is here.
What about us? Are we blessed and gifted, chosen and called, in this way? If we obey the Lord’s commandment and respond to His call in our lives, we will also experience God’s powerful work in us and for us and through us. Even miracles are possible, if they are necessary to God’s Plan and we have the true humility to know that whatever good is done comes from God and not ourselves. Any fruit we bear comes from the vigor of the Vine, not from the spindly branches on their own. Any effectiveness we experience in our efforts comes from God’s grace and initiative; it is for us to remain humble and trusting, glorifying Him and not ourselves or our own efforts (no matter how heroic those efforts might be!). We cannot become self-promoting, or self-reliant, or self-seeking, or self-satisfied. When we pat ourselves on the back for our own cleverness or holiness, we are hitting our self-destruct button.
The “secret sauce” to fruitfulness in the spiritual realm is seeking our joy and satisfaction in glorifying God for what He does for us, giving thanks that He has called us to work on His Team (through Baptism), and bringing HIM to others, not our own cleverness or even good desires!
“For God is the one who, for his good purpose, works in you both to desire and to work” (Phil 2:13).
Los 72 discípulos han hecho algunas cosas asombrosas: han sometido a los demonios y se les ha dado el poder de pisar serpientes sin ser dañados. Así que, por supuesto, se están regocijando. Pero Jesús quiere asegurarse de que se regocijen en lo correcto. El poder que se les ha dado no es motivo de regocijo; es el hecho de “Alégrense más bien de que sus nombres están escritos en el cielo” lo que es motivo de regocijo. Jesús alaba a su Padre por todo esto y da una visión profunda de la vida de la Trinidad. “Todo me lo ha entregado mi Padre.” Sólo el Padre conoce plenamente Quién es el Hijo, y sólo el Hijo conoce plenamente al Padre; pero el Hijo quiere compartir este conocimiento, y revelar al Padre a los demás y a nosotros, si estamos verdaderamente abiertos.
Entonces Jesús se dirige a sus Apóstoles en privado y, todavía regocijándose con santa alegría por la fe que ha visto, deja en claro qué gran bendición les ha sido dada, al ser escogidos y llamados a caminar con él y ver las maravillas de Dios: “Muchos profetas y reyes quisieron ver lo que ustedes ven y no lo vieron…” El Reino está aquí.
¿Qué pasa con nosotros? ¿Somos bendecidos y dotados, escogidos y llamados de esta manera? Si obedecemos el mandamiento del Señor y respondemos a Su llamado en nuestra vida, también vamos a experimentar la obra poderosa de Dios en nosotros, para nosotros y a través de nosotros. Incluso los milagros son posibles, si son necesarios para el Plan de Dios y tenemos la verdadera humildad de saber que todo el bien que se hace proviene de Dios y no de nosotros mismos. Cualquier fruto que llevamos proviene del vigor de la Vid, no de las ramas delgadas por sí solas. Cualquier eficacia que experimentamos en nuestros esfuerzos proviene de la gracia y la iniciativa de Dios; nos corresponde permanecer humildes y confiados, glorificando a Él y no a nosotros mismos ni a nuestros propios esfuerzos (¡por heroicos que sean esos esfuerzos!). No podemos volvernos auto-promocionados, o auto-suficientes, o egoístas, o auto-satisfechos. Cuando nos damos palmaditas en la espalda por nuestra propia inteligencia o santidad, estamos presionando nuestro botón de auto-destrucción.
La “salsa secreta” para la fecundidad en el ámbito espiritual es buscar nuestro gozo y satisfacción en glorificar a Dios por lo que Él hace por nosotros, dar gracias porque Él nos ha llamado a trabajar en Su Equipo (a través del Bautismo), y llevarlo a ÉL a otros, ¡no nuestra propia astucia o incluso buenos deseos!
“Porque Dios es quien, más allá de la buena disposición de ustedes, realiza en ustedes el querer y el actuar” (Filipenses 2:13).
